The AI Phone Guy vs. Goodcall: Which AI Receptionist Actually Fits a DFW Trade Shop?
An honest side-by-side of Goodcall and The AI Phone Guy for HVAC, plumbing, roofing, electrical, and garage door shops in Dallas-Fort Worth. Real prices from each vendor's own site, what the price gap buys, and who should pick the cheaper option.
The short answer
Definition
AI Receptionist: Software that answers your business phone in a natural voice, asks the questions you would ask, and books the job or routes the call, around the clock, without a person on the line.
If you run an HVAC, plumbing, roofing, electrical, or garage door shop in Dallas-Fort Worth, you have probably noticed that every AI receptionist company says roughly the same thing on its homepage. The real differences show up in three places: what you pay, who does the setup work, and what happens when a call does not fit the script.
This is a straight comparison between Goodcall and us, The AI Phone Guy. Yes, we are one of the two companies being compared, so we have done the one thing that keeps a comparison honest: every Goodcall fact below comes from Goodcall's own website, checked in October 2026, with links in the Sources section at the bottom. Where Goodcall's site does not say something, we do not guess. And where Goodcall wins, we say so.
Note
What does Goodcall cost per month?
According to Goodcall's pricing page, there are three self-serve plans and an Enterprise tier:
| Goodcall plan | Monthly price | Unique customers included | Extra customers | Goodcall's call estimate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $79 | 100 | 79 cents each | About 150 calls/month |
| Growth | $129 | 500 | 26 cents each | About 750 calls/month |
| Scale | $299 | 2,000 | 15 cents each | About 3,000 calls/month |
| Enterprise | Custom | More than 2,000 | Volume pricing | Contact sales |
A few details matter here. Goodcall bills by unique customer, which its FAQ defines as "one phone number, once a month." If the same homeowner calls back five times in March, that counts once. Spam and wrong numbers do not count. Goodcall also says it never meters minutes, calls, or tokens, so a nine-minute booking call costs the same as a thirty-second one.
Plans also differ in how many "workers" (specialists inside your agent, such as a booker or a message taker), external tools, team members, and days of call history you get. Starter includes 5 workers, 1 external tool, 1 team member, and 30-day call history. Growth bumps that to 10 workers, 5 external tools, 5 team members, and 90-day history.
Goodcall's own pricing page describes Starter as "for a solo operator who misses calls while on the job" and Growth as "for a busy shop booking work by phone every day." That is a fair description, and those are exactly the shops we serve too.
What does The AI Phone Guy cost per month?
The AI Phone Guy is $482 a month, as listed on our hear-it page. No contract. No per-minute billing. That price includes nights, weekends, and holidays, and we do the setup for you.
So let us say it plainly: Goodcall is cheaper. At Starter, Goodcall is $403 a month less than we are. At Growth, it is $353 a month less. Even Goodcall's Scale plan, built for several locations, is $183 a month less than our price. If price is the only thing that matters to you, Goodcall wins this comparison and you can stop reading here.
If you are still reading, the rest of this article is about what the difference in price actually pays for, and how to decide whether it is worth it for your shop.
Who actually does the setup work?
This is the biggest real difference between the two, and it is a difference in model, not quality.
Goodcall is self-serve. Its homepage describes Gabi, "the agent that builds and runs yours." You tell Gabi what you want by typing or talking, it builds your agent, and you test it before you approve it. Goodcall says there is "no code and nothing to configure," and its FAQ says you can edit your agent in plain English with "agent-powered edits," unlimited on every plan. You pick your plan from the pricing page and click "Get started." Goodcall's Enterprise tier is the one that lists onboarding as an included item.
That is a genuinely modern approach, and for an owner who likes tinkering, it is fast and flexible. The catch is the same catch with any self-serve tool: the result is only as good as what you tell it. Somebody has to sit down and think through your service area, the questions you ask on a no-cool call versus a tune-up, how you handle a gas smell, which calls should ring your cell, and what to say when a caller asks about price. With a self-serve tool, that somebody is you.
The AI Phone Guy is done-for-you. We build and configure the receptionist for your specific shop: your trade, your services, your service area, your hours, and your rules for urgent calls. You do not log into a builder. It is live in under 48 hours. When something about your business changes, you tell us and we update it. If you want to see what that process looks like step by step, read how an AI phone answering service gets set up for a shop.
Goodcall gives you a very good tool and lets you build. We do the building. That is most of what the price gap pays for.
What happens when a call does not fit the script?
Every AI receptionist eventually gets a caller it cannot handle. The question is what it does next.
Goodcall's FAQ says that when its agent cannot answer something, "It hands off. By default it transfers the call to your business line." You can point the transfer at a person or department instead, have it take a message, send a self-service link, or schedule a callback. Goodcall's homepage adds that transfers go "to the right person, with a backup if they don't pick up," and that every call is recorded and transcribed. That is a solid, sensible design.
With The AI Phone Guy, we set those rules up with you during setup: which calls are true emergencies, who gets them, and what the receptionist books on its own. For example, a burst pipe at 11 PM can ring your cell while a routine water heater quote gets booked for Tuesday. We wrote up how that split works in routing true emergencies to your cell while the AI books the rest.
Both approaches can work. The practical difference again comes down to who designs the rules.
Does either one connect to my calendar or field service software?
Goodcall's homepage shows Google Calendar "connected" in its plumbing example, shows a lead being "Sent to HighLevel," and says calls can go to HighLevel "or your own system." It also links to a Zapier integration. Its pricing page explains that an "external tool" can be "an API, an MCP server, or a code block you write yourself," and that each plan includes a set number of them (1 on Starter, 5 on Growth, 15 on Scale).
We could not find ServiceTitan, Jobber, or Housecall Pro named on Goodcall's homepage or pricing page, so we are not going to claim it does or does not work with them. If you run one of those platforms, ask Goodcall directly before you sign up, and ask us the same question. Any honest vendor will tell you exactly what connects natively and what needs a workaround.
How do I keep my existing business number?
Both work with the number your customers already know. Goodcall's FAQ says every plan includes a local number, and you can keep your existing number by setting up call forwarding with your phone provider, so calls reach the agent when your line is busy or unanswered, or every time if you prefer.
The AI Phone Guy works the same basic way: your customers keep dialing the number on your truck and your Google listing, and calls forward to the receptionist on the rules you choose. We handle that setup with you.
Is there a free trial or demo?
Goodcall does not advertise a timed free trial. Its FAQ answers "Is there a free trial?" with "Better: a free demo agent. Build it, test it, hear it answer, and only pay when you connect a number." That is a genuinely low-risk way to try it.
The AI Phone Guy's demo is a phone call. Call (817) 670-9689, tell the receptionist your trade and your company name, and it will answer as your shop. Give it a real job, interrupt it, change the address halfway through. That call is the whole demo, and it is the fastest way to judge how it would sound to your customers. You can also hear it on our demo page.
Why does picking up every call matter this much?
Whichever tool you pick, the reason to have one is the same. Invoca's 2024 research on home-services businesses found that 27% of calls go unanswered, and that fewer than 3% of callers sent to voicemail leave a message. Ruby's 2023 Call Trends Report found that 80% of callers would rather hang up than leave a voicemail. A voicemail box is not a safety net. It is where jobs quietly go to the next shop on the list.
Speed matters too. The MIT lead-response study by James Oldroyd (2007), later summarized in Harvard Business Review's "The Short Life of Online Sales Leads" (2011), found that contacting a lead within 5 minutes instead of 30 made a business 100 times more likely to reach them and 21 times more likely to qualify them. An AI receptionist, from Goodcall or from us, answers on the first ring. That is the real win, and it is the same win with either vendor.

Who should pick Goodcall instead of The AI Phone Guy?
We would rather you pick the right tool than pick us for the wrong reason. Goodcall is likely the better fit if:
- Your budget is tight right now. $79 or $129 a month is real money saved versus $482, and a working AI receptionist at a low price beats voicemail at any price.
- You like building and tuning software yourself. Goodcall's builder is designed for exactly that, and edits are unlimited on every plan.
- You are not in Dallas-Fort Worth. Goodcall is built for small businesses broadly, with examples from plumbing to dental to retail on its homepage. We focus on DFW trade shops.
- Your calls are simple and predictable. If most callers just need hours, a quote callback, or a booking, a self-built agent can cover that well.
- You want to experiment before committing. The free demo agent lets you build and hear it before you pay.
Who should pick The AI Phone Guy instead?
The AI Phone Guy is likely the better fit if:
- You do not want to build it yourself. You run a trade shop. You want the phone answered, not another software project. We configure it around your shop.
- You want it live fast without your time. In under 48 hours, with your input but without you sitting in a builder.
- You want a local person to call. We are based in Dallas-Fort Worth and we only focus on the trades and markets we know.
- You want one flat monthly number. $482 a month, no contract, no per-minute billing, nights and weekends included.

If Goodcall fits, great, your phones are getting answered. If you would rather have it built and handled for you, book a discovery call and we will walk through your shop, your call flow, and your rules, then get you live.
Frequently asked questions
Is Goodcall cheaper than The AI Phone Guy?
Yes. As listed on goodcall.com/pricing in October 2026, Goodcall starts at $79 a month (Starter, 100 unique customers a month) and its Growth plan is $129 a month (500 unique customers). The AI Phone Guy is $482 a month. The difference pays for a done-for-you setup built around your specific shop, rather than a tool you configure yourself.
Does Goodcall charge per minute or per call?
No. Goodcall's pricing page says it never meters minutes, calls, or tokens. It bills per unique customer, meaning one phone number once a month, and extra customers above your plan bill at the plan's own rate (79 cents on Starter, 26 cents on Growth, 15 cents on Scale).
Does Goodcall have a free trial?
Goodcall's pricing FAQ describes a free demo agent instead of a timed trial. You can build it, test it, and hear it answer, and you only pay when you connect a phone number.
Who sets up the AI receptionist with each option?
Goodcall is built for self-serve setup: you describe what you want to Gabi, its builder agent, by typing or talking, and it builds and edits your agent. With The AI Phone Guy, we build and configure it for your shop, and it is live in under 48 hours.
Which one should a one-truck shop pick?
If you like configuring software, your call volume is modest, and every dollar matters right now, Goodcall's Starter or Growth plan is a reasonable place to start. If you would rather not build or tune it yourself and want someone local to set it up around your trade, The AI Phone Guy is built for that. Either way, call each demo line and judge the call yourself.
